Vitamin D
Vitamin D is known as the sunshine vitamin because it is manufactured by by the skin on exposure to ultraviolet rays from the sun, as well as being provided in food. The manufacture of vitamin D is influenced by our location, the season, use of sunblock and skin pigmentation. Lack of exposure to sunlight due to our climate conditions and people's health concerns has meant that much of the Irish population may be lacking in Vitamin D levels.
Vitamin D is crucial for bone growth and renewal as it stimulates the absorption of calcium. It also assists in the absorption of vitamin C and works well with vitamin A. Vitamin D is required for nervous system function and blood clotting. Since dietary sources of vitamin D include eggs and fatty fish, many vegans choose to boost their intake by using supplements.
