Essential Fatty Acids (EFAs)

Fatty acids are the building blocks of fats, two of which are just as essential as vitamins and minerals are to the body. Omega-6 linoleic and omega-3 alpha linolenic acids are EFA's that cannot be manufactured by the body and need to be obtained from our diet. Many people do not obtain adequate amounts of essential fatty acids from their diet, especially omega-3.

EFA's are vital to the cells that make up our skin, hair and nails. These "good fats" provide the foundation for long term skin, heart and joint health. Flax seed oil and fish oils are excellent sources of omega-3 while evening primrose oil is a popular source of omega-6. It is important to get a balance of the omega-3 and omega-6 essential fatty acids and many brands offer a blend of oils to help you achieve this balance.
