All Badger Balm sunscreen products offer excellent broad-spectrum protection, which is backed by tests and can only be achieved with zinc oxide. This means that the zinc oxide used by Badger Balm is the only active ingredient needed to effectively protect the skin from both UVA and UVB rays and has a critical wavelength of 374-384 nm.
This is especially important because there are several critical wavelengths of ultraviolet light, including:
UVA is a long-wave, black light in the wavelength range of 320-400nm. These rays are not blocked by glass, clouds or the ozone layer and make up most of the UV radiation reaching the Earth's surface. They have the same strength throughout the year and penetrate deeper layers of the skin - the dermis. There, they cause light-induced skin aging, radiation-related damage such as wrinkles, leathery skin and hyperpigmentation, and contribute to various forms of skin cancer, including melanoma.
UVB is a medium-wave in the wavelength range of 290-320nm and is largely absorbed by the ozone layer. They have different strengths, which are dependent on the position of the sun and, moreover, can be weakened by clouds. UVB rays penetrate only the uppermost skin layer - the epidermis - causing sunburn, are the main cause of basal cell and squamous cell carcinoma and a significant factor for melanoma.
UVC is a short-wave in the wavelength range of 200-290 nm, which are blocked by the ozone layer and do not reach the Earth's surface in any noteworthy intensity. They can damage the skin - the next-smaller wavelength would be X-rays - and are only relevant for astronauts or pilots exposed to very high altitudes.
The zinc oxide found in Badger Balm Sunscreens is a true broad-spectrum protection that not only protects against UVA and UVB rays but also covers the UVC range and is represented by the orange symbol labelled UVA-UVB on the tube.
The UVA seal on the packaging confirms balanced UVA-UVB protection in a ratio of 1: 3. In addition, the critical wavelength in nm can be seen on every product. For Japanese customers, the blue-white, 4-level symbol with the inscription PA is relevant, which shows a measured value for UV protection and ranges from PA to PA +++.
